...not the rule. 90% of people don’t care about 10/10ths driving or how many cylinders or gears their car has. If anything they buy based on branding, looks, comfort, and economy.
The 4-banger F-type has all of those things, as does the base Boxster/Cayman/718 and the ecoboost Mustang.
...and that’s perfectly fine. Remember, somebody has to buy all these cars (and their V8/performance counterparts) new in order for us to buy them used for cheap in 5-10 years.
(Also, Oppo Facebook is just cancer)

There’s a huge entitlement problem in the enthusiast circle.
“X can’t go around a track? Worthless”
“Y is FWD? Sad.”
“Z is too expensive. I’ll buy it used.”
“Why won’t XYZ give us a cool car?”
You fuckers are the reason for all your problems.

How can people complain about a 300hp rwd jaguar coupe that’s good to drive. That’s freaking awesome.

Yep, I completely agree. Don’t blame the industry for our own shortcoming, nor should the industry indulge all of our dumb fantasies (I’m looking at you Demon).

Bah I say, Bah. The UK is Jag’s biggest market where 80% of the cars are manual and 98% of drivers can drive manuals. The annoying thing is that the diesel 4 banger is available with a manual and it’s the same damn block. Just give us the damn petrol manual combo already.

I can agree that at the price point, I would pay the extra $1500 and get the 6 cylinder. But I’m not the majority of people either.

I think it’s easy to remember that most people don’t care about what we care about when it comes to Subaru cross treks or Nissan Altimas. It’s harder to remember that someone who really doesn’t care about enthusiast things, when we are talking about a cayman or an F-Type. But you’re right.

They want a Jag or a Porsche, and for them 300hp in a 3300 lb car will be “so fast” and for street use they’re right.

Presumably people where fuel isn’t £1.20+ a litre, and the roads are mostly straight lines...
If it sounds good enough I don’t really have any issue with it, it’s enough power to get into trouble. Less weight always helps.

Bah I say, Bah. The UK is Jag’s biggest market where 80% of the cars are manual and 98% of drivers can drive manuals.
I think you’ll find that the bulk of those manual transmission cars are small econoboxes with tiny engines; the bigger cars with more powerful engines are more likely to be automatic. To wit, BMW actually killed the manual in the M5 for Europe long before finally dropping it in the US.

At least Dodge has the sense to build only ~3,000 Demons. Highly specialized cars really can’t sell in volumes like other cars.

Yep, but its real competition is the V6 auto, which is ~$3k more. Not an insignificant amount, but that depends on who you are.

Isn’t there also a tax on displacement in a lot of places in Europe? And I believe the displacement also affects insurance.
So you save $1,500 up front, and a lot more down the road it seems.

A better comparison is the V6/auto which is ~$3k more. I’d save my pennies too, but I can’t condemn a 300hp 4 banger either.

I’m not actually sure. The UK used to be based on displacement a long time ago, then CO2 emissions. Now I think of it though, they introduce a new tax for cars over £40k and I think this new Jag squeaks in under that. That’s probably why!
Edit im wrong, its nearly £50k so only a minimal tax saving at first registration.

Don’t forget that the majority of enthusiasts also buy used. Sure some still buy new thankfully, but brands definitely cannot plan for the used market, since that is completely irrelevant to them. I for one never plan to buy new. Some day I shall maybe buy 2-3 years old but I find it asinine to eat the depreciation curve in any vehicle for absolutely no reason.

Well in our case, RHD is a bigger problem as seen with recent examples most notably the Alfa Gulia. However as I said Jag have all the bits and the market to do it they just aren’t because they seem to be doing everything these day at a glacier pace.

They still have to spend the money on calibration and certification testing. Could easily be a few million bucks to do that.

Yep, I addressed that a bit. We rely on others to buy what we want first, so all this conjecture about “I’d buy a used X instead” is silly. 5 years from now these may be $25k, and it’ll be a lux/performance bargain.

Nissan: We have a more powerful BRZ right here. It’s called the 370Z. It has a big V6 engine that makes plenty more power. As such we’ve had to stiffen the chassis to be able to handle all that power, so it’s just a little bigger and heavier than the BRZ. Thoughts?

Except it isn’t. It’s an ancient platform with a mediocre engine that doesn’t lead its class in ANYTHING. Value, handling, performance, comfort, etc. nothing.

I think your numbers are a bit low. It’s more like 98%. That’s why crossovers are so popular, they drive just fine, are easier to get in and out of, and get decent fuel economy.
